Two young brothers from Syria play with water at a WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) spot inside the new accommodation site at Lagkadikia. ; At least 10,000 refugees and migrants remain camped at the Idomeni site, at Greece’s northern border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, after nations along the so-called Western Balkan Route effectively closed their borders in March. Living conditions for those who remain at Idomeni are dire.   Greek authorities are gradually moving people from the informal site near Greece’s border village of Idomeni, to newly built, longer-term reception facilities throughout the country. From there, they can pursue legal options, such as applying for asylum in Greece or the European Union’s relocation scheme.   Far away from the unrest and despair of Idomeni, the Lagkadikia accommodation site offers refugee families something close to normalcy: a dry bed, warm water, a playground for children. Set up next to the village of Lagkadikia in northern Greece, it is now home to about 300 refugees, mostly families from Syria and Iraq. Greek authorities with the support of the UNHCR manage and operate the site.   At this early stage, accommodation is provided in the form of UNHCR tents, each meant for a family of 6 persons. The site will eventually host up to 1,400 people. UNHCR provides 3 catered meals per day and is also working to facilitate access to the asylum procedure for the people staying on the site. There are plans to renovate the abandoned buildings on site, into a public kitchen, a medical clinic and a school.
